What is IPL Therapy?

Intense pulsed light treatment, also known as light therapy or photofacial, uses light energy to create targeted heat that can affect skin cells and hair. Using an IPL device, a medical professional targets wavelengths of light onto your skin, which heats it in the process. It works similar to lasers, except IPLs have multiple wavelengths while lasers have only one wavelength. This means that IPL therapy can cover more areas of skin and hair, making the process faster and more effective.

IPL therapy is generally used for two types of aesthetic treatments: hair removal and skin rejuvenation. This is because of how your body reacts to the heat produced by these wavelengths. For most patients, it’s a safe, effective, and convenient treatment that can help them achieve their desired results. However, results can vary, so it’s best to get your IPL treatments from experienced providers who can prevent adverse effects like moderate pain or skin discoloration.

Let ZenLife MD Enhance Your Appearance from Head to Toe

At ZenLife MD, we have the state-of-the-art IPL equipment and experienced medical professionals to provide IPL treatments that deliver stunning results. We’re well-suited to provide both hair removal treatments and skin rejuvenation services, which encompasses a wide number of treatment areas and skin conditions that can prevent you from feeling your most confident.

Hair Removal

IPL treatments can be used to remove unwanted body hair in areas like your legs, underarms, arms, bikini area, face, and more. The gentle light energy safely causes hair to fall off while also creating a thinning effect on future body hair.

How It Works

The light energy produced by the IPL device is absorbed by your skin’s melanin, which is the substance responsible for giving your skin its color. The melanin then converts the light energy into heat, which stimulates your hair follicles to go into its resting phase. This weakens your follicles and causes hair loss, while also slowing down the hair growth process for future hair growth.

Is It Effective?

IPL triggers hair loss more gently than laser hair removal and shares many similar benefits. LIke laser hair removal, it is semi-permanent and needs several treatments before you can damage your hair follicles and stunt unwanted hair growth for several years. Maintenance treatments are needed at least once a year following your scheduled treatment plan to prevent hair follicles from regenerating. If you skip out on maintenance treatments, hair will eventually regrow, but it will be much thinner than original.

Compared to other unwanted hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, epilating, and tweezing, IPL can thin out the hairs with regular use. It also takes longer for your hair follicles to restimulate and trigger new hair growth. IPL treatments for hair removal also removes the regular maintenance required for hair removal, as well as the risk of effects like ingrown hairs.

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments

IPL can also be used for skin rejuvenation treatments. Our treatment sessions can trigger your body’s natural skin cell regeneration process and give you a youthful glow.

How It Works

IPL’s light energy is converted into heat energy by your skin. This does two things: first, it gets rid of old and damaged skin cells which your body naturally removes by shedding away your older skin. At the same time, the process also brings forward your newer skin cells to replace the old ones. This improves your appearance as you have younger, healthier cells replacing your worn out cells.

Areas We Treat

IPL treatments can be used to treat old skin cells that show different signs of aging and other blemishes. By removing these old cells and bringing forward new cells, IPL therapy can reduce the appearance of conditions like:

  • Fine lines and Fine Wrinkles
  • Age Spots
  • Sun Damage
  • Freckles and Birthmarks
  • Spider Veins, Varicose Veins, and Other Broken Blood Vessels
  • Rosacea
  • Skin Discoloration and Hyperpigmentation
  • Scars

Benefits of IPL Therapy

IPL treatments can cover larger areas of your body without the need for incisions or invasive treatments. Using light wavelengths, we can trigger your body’s natural cell production and hair growth while minimizing the discomfort patients can feel during aesthetic treatments. Some of the benefits you can receive when you choose IPL treatments include:

  • Faster Treatment and Recovery. Compared to laser therapy and other aesthetic treatments that provide similar results, IPL has more wavelengths and can treat more areas quicker.
  • Avoid the ablative effect of lasers. Lasers provide skin rejuvenation by damaging and removing the top layer of your skin, which can cause pain and discomfort as well as require some downtime and up to three weeks of recovery. IPL treatments don’t damage the top layer of skin, so you can avoid painful side effects and potential skin damage.
  • Non-invasive procedure. No incisions, injections, or dermabrasion are needed during treatment, so there’s hardly any need for downtime. While you might want to avoid strenuous activity for a few days after treatment to minimize redness and swelling, you can resume your daily routine immediately after treatment.

Receiving IPL Therapy at ZenLife MD

If you want to see the effects of skin rejuvenation throughout your body, you may benefit from an effective IPL treatment plan from our facility. Schedule your appointment with us so that our medical professionals can determine if you’re the right candidate for our IPL treatments.

Who Can Receive IPL Therapy?

IPL is safe and effective, but it’s not for everyone. To find out if you’re a good candidate for IPL treatments, schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Kareem at our health and wellness center. She can determine if you’re a good fit for these treatments or, if not, potential alternatives you can consider.

Some factors that can disqualify clients from receiving IPL treatment include:

  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • Currently taking Accutane or any retinoid or medication for acne
  • Have an active skin infection or are taking medication for your infection (schedule your treatment after your infection has completely healed)
  • Have issues with skin resurfacing, bleeding, and blood clotting
  • Have a history of keloid scarring or severe scarring
  • Currently has a severe sunburn (wait for your sunburn to subside before seeking treatment)

IPL is also best for patients with lighter skin and darker-colored hair, as these can affect your melanin’s ability to absorb light energy and convert it into heat.

Our Treatment Process

At ZenLife MD, our clients get unparalleled levels of service every step of the way. All our patients need to undergo an initial consultation prior to their treatment. This is to determine if the treatment they want lines up with the beauty, health, and wellness goals that they want to achieve. Dr. Kareem can also determine if you’re a good candidate for IPL treatments or if there are safer alternatives for you, or if you need a custom treatment plan to help you achieve your goals.

If you’re a qualified candidate for IPL, we can begin treatment in our sterile facility that carries state-of-the-art equipment. First, our treatment providers will sterilize the treatment area before applying a cooling gel to minimize the discomfort of the IPL’s heat. You’ll also be given protective eyewear to prevent eye damage caused by the light.

Next, your provider will then use our IPL device to administer targeted wavelengths to the treatment area. For those with an average pain tolerance, IPL treatments cause very minimal discomfort. Many report the sensation being similar to being snapped with a rubber band. Depending on how large the treatment area is and the number of treatment areas around your body, it can take up to 30 minutes of treatment.

Most skin conditions need multiple treatment sessions to achieve your desired results. For skin conditions, you may need up to six treatments scheduled at least one month apart. Semi-permanent hair removal can take up to 12 treatment sessions.

Long-Term Results of IPL Treatment

Following your treatment, you may experience common side effects like redness and skin that’s sensitive to the touch. This will subside in a matter of days. To manage your discomfort, you can use home remedies and over-the-counter pain relievers. Taking a break from strenuous activities and hot activities like saunas, tanning beds, and hot showers can minimize the effects.

After several treatments, you should begin to see your desired results. For hair removal, IPL will eventually weaken and put your hair follicles in a dormant state. You’ll need follow-up maintenance treatments at least once a year to keep your hair follicles dormant, otherwise it will eventually repair itself and regrow hair. However, the hair will be much thinner and sparser than it was originally.

For skin rejuvenation, you should begin to see your blemishes begin to subside or fade after several treatments. On top of the minimized appearance of your skin conditions, you should also begin to see your skin’s health improve. With the newer, healthier skin cells taking over, your skin can begin to look firmer and more taut than it was originally.

FAQs About IPL Treatment

Q: What’s the difference between laser treatments and IPL treatments?

A: There are several differences in terms of quality and results. Laser treatment has one wavelength of light, while IPL has many. This means IPL can cover larger treatment areas faster. IPL’s light is more scattered and can penetrate down to the dermis layer of your skin without harming the top epidermis layer. Lasers, on the other hand, can be ablative and remove the dermis layer for treatments like laser skin resurfacing.

Q: Do I need to have a certain skin color or hair color to get IPL treatment?

A: IPL treatment is best for those with darker hair colors and darker skin tones. The pigment from melanin is necessary to absorb light energy and convert it into heat. Schedule your consultation to determine if your hair and skin tone is best for IPL treatment or if we can provide alternative hair removal and skin rejuvenation treatments.

Q: What’s the cost of IPL treatments?

A: The average cost of IPL treatment can range from $300 up to $1,200 per session, depending on factors like the size of the treatment area and what you plan to have treated. We can give you a more accurate quote when we discuss your treatment goals during your initial consultation.
